Disciplining India: paternalism, neo-liberalism and <i>Hindutva</i> civilizationalism

Abstract Policy hybrids, which combine marketizing and liberalizing reforms with social welfare programmes state support to boost domestic production, are fast becoming the norm globally. How neo-liberal national-developmentalist agendas reconciled as governing practices, what their national international outcomes implications? This article focuses on understudied case of India, arguing that a paternalist political rationality, melds logics in neo-liberalism government's Hindutva civilizationalist politics, underpins its flagship economic policy, Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan (Self-reliant India Mission). through production-linked incentives, aims Indian manufacturing. has benefited from global push diversify supply chains forge new geopolitical partnerships, such Quad, undermine China's manufacturing dominance assertiveness. Yet, current approach consolidates large firms, producing an elitist economy, does not address structural weaknesses public investment areas like research education. implications for India's development, trade geopolitics. These arguments made by identifying theories practices neo-liberalism, politics; assessing elaborated government officials; evaluating early incentive schemes.
